This was a dream of Gary Burley, back in 2003, after he had become involved in the mini breed a few years before that. It was his idea to bring people together that had an interest and a commitment to minis, to get an organization up and running. The main purpose was to unite all those involved in the mini industry to insure the promotion of the breed and to have better communication with those people already involved in other parts of the province.
So it was, that on December 6, 2003, a meeting was called for the organization of a miniature horse group representing all of Nova Scotia. Despite the weather conditions, 12 members were present for the founding meeting; impressive, to say the least. This first meeting was held at the Police Stations Community Room in Truro.
The next two meetings were devoted to the planning and creation of a constitution that this new organization would abide by. These were long and perhaps tedious meetings but great things got accomplished. To make a long story short, the paper work got done and we were on our way, hereafter, to be know as MHANS; Miniature Horse Association of Nova Scotia.
The first year was a growing year for many, with new members learning the "do's and don'ts" of the mini world. There were clinics and meetings and rule books from the AMHA and the AMHR to be read and discussed. As with all things new, the kinks were getting worked out.
By the second year, there were more members and our own set of rules representing the best of the AMHA and the AMHR regulations. MHANS got their Rules!!!
The second year was filled with lots of shows, lots of learning and lots of fun! At least we hope so! There are always those undefined moments that can cause difficulties and stress for some, however, the positive side of all this, is that we can say, "lesson learned!"
It is with much sadness that MHANS lost one of their members. Gary O'Brien was a member, friend, and a great lover of all animals. Before he passed away he carved a beautiful plaque and gave it to MHANS to use as a fundraiser. Thank you Gary, you will never be forgotten.
There were lots of firsts this year, (second year) with new members driving for the first time, new horses being shown for the first time, new exhibitions (Pictou) for the first time, and the Cape Breton Classic!! Way to go MHANS!!!
With the start of a new season, our third year, I am sure that there will be many more firsts; one of which is our very own show on June 24th, 2006. It is the hope of our executive and club members that everyone has a wonderful summer and show season. To coin an old cliche, "It's now how much you win, BUT, how you play the game!" |
