An overview of the 2008 Survey that was sent out to all MHANS members and some who were prior members.
87% of those that responded attend the meetings and enjoyed them and the guest speakers. Some felt that the meetings should be no longer than 1 or 2 hours and some additional topics for guest speakers were training techniques including videos; blacksmith; and the vet.
Everyone who responded:
attended some or all MHANS shows;
thought the shows were organized appropriately;
enjoyed the classes;
thought that the prize money was sufficient in the shows that had prize money;
are satisfied with the judges we’ve had so far;
think that the rules of the shows are appropriate;
think that it is a good idea that people have to be members of MHANS to compete
Most have gone to other miniature horse shows as well. Approximately 48% prefer 1 day shows, and 30% had no preference. 61% thought we should have more classes and it seems they want more novice classes by the suggestions. 52% would like to see more driving classes and 52% do not want more games. 57% do not want to see the classes divided into A&B and 83% do not want the classed divided into mens and ladies. 78% would like to see all shows have prize money but 87% said they would also attend if there were only ribbons. 61% also would like to see stake classes at each show. It was also suggested that the stake class prize money should cover the cost of the class. 96% thought that the awards given out were sufficient. 91% are satisfied with the points system and only 30% wanted the exhibitions to be part of our points system. When asked if they would attend shows in PEI if PEI were part of our points system they were split but the comments were: I am from PEI; I go anyways; if work allowed; not all members could attend; we can’t afford to go. 74% would like to see MHANS take a more active role in the exhibitions and 87% said they would attend as an exhibitor if there were mini classes but commented that they could not go for more than 1 or 2 days. 96% plan on attending the year end banquet and there were several positive comments about prior banquets. 91% felt that there was enough correspondence/communication from the association. 83% have attended clinics. They would like to see harnessing, showmanship, driving, in-hand obstacle training, grooming and proper feeding as other clinic topics. When asked for suggestions on how we can actively promote the miniature breed it was suggested that keep the shows for registered horses, exhibitions; displays; website; try to become recognized in other provinces; have fun shows to get younger people involved and interested; simplify the association membership form so 1 form will cover everything; coordinate MHANS and PEI so we can attend all; see if the exhibitions would consolidate the mini classes into one day; get brochures out to feed stores and breeders.
